Foscarnet Price, Uses, Side Effects & Warnings
Foscarnet- An Overview:
Foscarnet is authorized as an antiviral agent. The medicine shows activity against human herpesviruses and HIV. It is used for the treatment of eye complications caused by CMV in individuals with AIDS. The drug is also used for the treatment of a type of HSV that cannot be treated by another drug in individuals with a weak immune system. Foscarnet sodium is supplied under the brand name Foscavir, which is an organic analogue of inorganic pyrophosphate that blocks the imitation of herpesviruses in vitro including CMV and HSV types 1 and 2. This medicinal product exerts its antiviral action by a selective blockage at the pyrophosphate binding site on virus-specific DNA polymerases at concentrations that do not impact cellular DNA polymerases. Foscarnet does not need activation by thymidine kinase or other kinases and therefore is enabled in vitro against HSV TK deficient mutants and CMV UL97 mutants. Thus, CMV strains resistant to ganciclovir or HSV strains resistant to acyclovir may be sensitive to this medicine.

Patients with a history of existing prolongation of cardiac conduction intervals, mainly QTc, in those with significant electrolyte disturbances or bradycardia, as well as those with underlying cardiac complications, must be monitored due to a higher risk for ventricular arrhythmia.
Foscarnet sodium is excreted in intense concentrations in human urine and may be related to genital irritation or ulceration. In order to prevent irritation or ulceration, precise attention to personal hygiene is needed and cleaning of the genital parts/area after each micturition is required.
